Varanasi's old city was built for feet and cows, not cars. Once you accept that, getting around becomes part of the fun.
The lanes (galis)
The heart of the old city is a web of narrow lanes you can only walk. Don't fight it — wander. Download an offline map, note a landmark near your stay, and ask shopkeepers if you're lost. People are kind.
For longer distances
- Cabs — best for the airport, Sarnath, BHU and early mornings. Book a verified one for a fixed fare.
- Auto and e-rickshaws — cheap and everywhere; agree on the price first.
- Cycle rickshaws — lovely and slow for short hops near the ghats.
Reaching the ghats
Most vehicles drop you a short walk from the river; the final stretch is on foot. Wear comfortable shoes you can slip off easily at temples.
Pro tip: pre-book your airport pickup and sunrise cab so you're never haggling at 5 AM.
Move slowly, look up at the old balconies, and let the city's rhythm carry you.
