Everyone knows the evening aarti. Far fewer know about its quiet cousin: Subah-e-Banaras, the morning program at Assi Ghat that begins before sunrise.
What happens
As the sky lightens, priests perform a morning aarti to the rising sun. Then comes classical music — a sitar, a flute, sometimes a vocalist — drifting over the water. Often there's a yoga session right there on the ghat. It is gentle, unhurried and free.
Why I love it
The evening aarti is a spectacle. Subah-e-Banaras is a feeling. There's space to sit on the steps, sip chai, and watch the city ease into the day. Locals come for the music, travellers for the calm, and everyone leaves a little softer.
- Arrive by 5:30–6 AM depending on the season.
- Pair it with a sunrise boat ride right afterwards.
- Bring a shawl and an open, quiet mind.
If your Varanasi mornings feel rushed, give one of them to Assi Ghat and just listen.
