In Varanasi, location is everything. The right area means you roll out of bed and onto the ghats; the wrong one means a long, dusty commute to the magic.

Assi Ghat — calm and convenient

The southern end of the ghats. Cleaner, a little quieter, full of cafes and the lovely Subah-e-Banaras morning program. Great for first-timers and families.

Around Dashashwamedh — in the thick of it

Steps from the main aarti and the busiest ghats. Atmospheric and central, but noisier and reachable only on foot through the lanes.

The old city lanes — for the romantics

Tiny heritage guesthouses with river views and rooftop chai. Charming, but be ready to carry your bag through narrow galis.

The cantonment (Cantt) — modern comfort

Big hotels, easy road access, near the station. Best if you want comfort and don't mind a short ride to the river.

My advice: stay near a ghat for at least one night. Waking up to the river changes everything.

Whatever you pick, book a verified property so what you see is what you get.
