Dev Deepawali rewards patient photography. The warm lamps and dark river create beautiful scenes, but the ghats remain places of worship and public movement. A considerate photographer first finds a safe place to stand, then takes the camera out.
Work with the available light
Arrive while there is still daylight so you can understand the steps and plan a frame. Try a wider scene that includes the lamps and river rather than moving into a dense crowd for a close-up. A phone's night mode can help, but it will not make an unsafe ledge safe.
Photograph respectfully
- Ask before taking a close portrait or photographing a ceremony.
- Keep flash away from worshippers and performers.
- Never photograph cremation rites or grieving families.
- Do not set up tripods where they block steps or emergency access.
If restrictions are announced, follow them. Take time to watch the event without a screen. For more practical tips beyond festival night, read our Varanasi photography guide.
