Dev Deepawali is the evening when Varanasi's riverfront becomes a landscape of lamps. It is observed around Kartik Purnima, after the more familiar Diwali celebrations. If this is your first visit, plan the experience around how you will reach and leave the ghats, not just where you will take photographs.

Start with one area

Choose an arrival point and a ghat you can reach comfortably. Dashashwamedh attracts visitors for the evening aarti; Assi can be a useful starting point for a longer riverside walk. Do not assume you can walk quickly between distant ghats in a festival crowd. Check local police diversions before leaving your hotel.

Make a realistic evening plan

Boat availability, viewing restrictions and weather conditions can change. Never treat an unconfirmed quote as a reserved seat. For a slower introduction to the city, read our Ganga Aarti guide before planning the festival evening.
