Varanasi is intense — gloriously, overwhelmingly intense. So when you need to breathe, go to Sarnath. It's only about 30–40 minutes by cab, but it feels like another world.
What to see
- Dhamek Stupa — the massive, ancient mound marking where the Buddha gave his first sermon.
- The Archaeological Museum — home to the famous Ashoka Lion Capital, India's national emblem.
- The deer park and monasteries built by Thai, Tibetan, Japanese and other Buddhist communities.
Why it's special
After the crowds of Kashi, Sarnath's wide lawns and quiet chanting feel like a long exhale. Sit under a tree near the stupa, watch the monks walk by, and you understand why this small town matters to a fifth of humanity.
Go in the morning, carry water, and pair it with lunch back in the city. A half day here will reset you for everything Varanasi throws at you next.
