The 'best' ghat depends less on a photo and more on what your group can comfortably manage. On Dev Deepawali, one ghat can feel open while another nearby approach is crowded. Access arrangements may change on the day, so keep a second option.

Dashashwamedh and the central ghats

Dashashwamedh is a natural choice if your priority is the famous evening Ganga Aarti area. It can also mean dense foot traffic through the old-city lanes. If someone in your group has limited mobility, check how far vehicles can actually reach and whether a less central viewpoint would be more comfortable.

Assi and a gentler approach

Assi Ghat can work as a starting point for travellers who prefer to orient themselves before heading toward busier stretches. It is not a promise of an empty ghat. Wherever you stand, do not block stairs, rescue access or people's prayers.

Choose your exit before sunset and agree on a pickup location away from crowd-control barriers. Check the district administration website for current notices. Our transport guide explains why the last part of a Varanasi journey is often on foot.
