It is easy to mix up Diwali and Dev Deepawali when planning a Varanasi trip. They are related by season, but they are not the same date or the same experience. Diwali is celebrated on the new-moon night; Dev Deepawali is associated with Kartik Purnima roughly a fortnight later.

What feels different?

Diwali has a more household and neighbourhood feel: lamps, family gatherings, sweets and worship. Dev Deepawali draws much of its attention to the Ganga ghats, where the public riverfront is illuminated. Both can be busy, but the routes and viewing areas that matter most to a traveller can be very different.
